Locals’ Summer on Topsail Island: Why September Might Be Our Favorite Time of Year
Ask someone who lives around Topsail when summer ends and you may get a different answer than the calendar gives you.
Around here, September has a bit of a reputation.
The big summer vacation weeks start winding down. School is back in session. Traffic gets a little easier. Getting across the bridge feels less like an event.
And yet, we're still at the beach...

What Is “Locals’ Summer?”
There isn't an official start date or an event that kicks it off. It's simply the nickname coastal communities use for that stretch after the traditional summer rush begins to settle down.
For the Topsail area, September is right in the middle of it.
The island starts moving at a different pace, giving locals - and visitors lucky enough to come this time of year - a chance to enjoy more of what makes Topsail special.
The Beach Is Still the Beach
Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer elsewhere, but it doesn't pack the coastline away for the year.
September can still bring plenty of opportunities for beach days, walks along the shoreline, fishing, paddling and evenings by the water.
Keep an eye on the daily forecast and ocean conditions, particularly during hurricane season, and take advantage of the good days when they arrive.
Sometimes the best beach day of the year happens after everyone else has gone home.
Revisit the Places You Avoided in July
Locals know the summer routine.
There are restaurants you love but don't necessarily want to wait for during the busiest weeks. Shops you've been meaning to browse. Parts of the island you haven't visited lately because traffic made staying closer to home sound much better.
Locals' summer is a good time to revisit them.
Grab lunch somewhere you haven't been in a while. Spend an afternoon walking around Surf City. Stop into a local shop instead of driving past it. Head farther down the island simply because you have the time.
It's an opportunity to experience your own hometown a little more like a visitor.
Spend an Evening Outside
One of the best parts of this time of year happens after the daytime heat starts backing off.
Take dinner outside. Walk the beach near sunset. Head to Soundside Park. Grab ice cream and stay out a little later.
You don't need an itinerary for every evening.
Some of the best locals' summer plans are barely plans at all.

The end of peak vacation season doesn't mean Surf City shuts down.
Community events continue into September and fall, making this a great time to pay attention to what's happening around town.
The Town of Surf City maintains an updated events calendar with markets, recreational programs, seasonal events and other community activities. Check the current calendar before making weekend plans - you may find something happening five minutes from home that you didn't know about.
Shop and Eat Local
Local businesses carry our beach communities through every season.
September is a great time to return to favorite restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and service businesses after the summer rush. It's also a good excuse to finally try the place you've driven past a hundred times.
If you're visiting during locals' summer, consider doing the same.
Topsail has plenty to explore beyond the beach, and spending locally gives you a much better feel for the community you're visiting.
Play Tourist for a Day
Living near Topsail makes it surprisingly easy to overlook the things people travel hours to experience.
Pick one day and treat it like you're here on vacation.
Walk somewhere new on the island. Watch the sunrise if you're usually a sunset person. Visit a local attraction. Grab lunch by the water. Take the picture you've stopped taking because you see the ocean all the time.
Living here doesn't make those things any less special.
Sometimes you just have to notice them again.
And Yes, Visitors Can Enjoy Locals’ Summer Too
You don't need a local address to appreciate this part of the season.
September and early fall can be a wonderful time to plan a Topsail stay, particularly if your schedule isn't tied to the traditional summer vacation calendar.
You'll still want to check individual business hours because some businesses adjust their schedules outside peak season. Weather and tropical systems also deserve extra attention this time of year.
Beyond that, the formula is pretty simple:
Come down. Slow down. Enjoy Topsail.
